MAIS/Concentration in Higher Education or Student Services

Candidates for the MAIS degree in Higher Education or Student Services must successfully complete 36 credits of graduate course work, including the following:

Higher Education Concentration Courses

  • 12 credits of core courses:  CTCH 601, The Community College; or CTCH 621 Higher Education in the United States; plus 9 additional credits chosen in consultation with the advisor.
  • 3 credits of research methodology
  • 3 credits of CTCH 622, Organization and Administration in Higher Education; or, CTCH 644, Student Services in Higher Education.
  • 9 credits of electives chosen in consultation with the advisor
  • 3 credits of CTCH 685 Practicum
  • 1 credit MAIS 797 Proposal writing
  • 2-5 credits of MAIS 798 Project, or 2-5 credits of MAIS 799 Thesis.

Students are required to take one research methodology course from a variety of courses offered at GMU. Electives may be chosen from the Public Affairs and International Affairs, Communication, Philosophy, Sociology departments, and other programs within the University.
