HEP Has a New Director

I am pleased to let you know that a new Director of the Higher Education Program has been hired. She will be joining us later this summer.

Jan Arminio is Professor and Chair, Department of Counseling and College Student Personnel, at Shippensburg University. She is the former President of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (2004-2007). Last year she received the Shaffer Award for Academic Excellence from NASPA. Her most recent book is "Why Aren't We There Yet?: Taking Personal Responsibility for Creating an Inclusive Campus." This fall she will be teaching CTCH 792, Research in Student Development.

It has been my pleasure to direct the program for the past 5 years. Together we have accomplished a lot, and the Program is in a great position to move forward. I look forward to continuing to work with many of you as I teach in NCC and HEP.
have a great summer,

John O'Connor

John O'Connor's farewell reception was held in the Johnson Center Gold Room on May 10th, and numerous students, administrators, and faculty attended to celebrate John's achievements and to thank him for his hard work as Program Director these past 5 years.

New Graduate Fellowships Website

Dear Colleagues,

I'm pleased to inform you that the brand new Graduate Fellowships web
site is now complete and fully operational.  The formal launch won't
take place until the beginning of the new academic year, but I want to
invite all of you to preview the site this summer.  Check out the links
to popular programs and downloadable lists of opportunities under the
Fellowship Opportunities tab.... check out the searchable database under
the Search tab... read about the support services for students, faculty,
and staff...

http://gradfellows.gmu.edu/

All of you have played a role in helping this project come to fruition -
THANK YOU.  At this time I welcome your comments and feedback on the
site.  Please let me know if anything is not working as well (or looking
as good) as it should so that I can address these issues before the
public launch in the fall.

I will be away for the next three weeks with limited access to email.
If I am slow to respond, please be assured that I will read your message
and act on it as soon as I can.  I will be back in the office the week
of July 16.

Best regards,

Kay Agoston

Graduate Student Life Website

I am truly excited to announce the official launch of the inaugural Graduate Student Life website, http://gradlife.gmu.edu/  The website provides a single location where information for graduate and professional students may be easily accessed, is complementary to the websites of academic programs, offers you a virtual method of connecting with each other through GAPSA's social media, and provides campus-wide visibility for graduate student events and announcements.

Your assistance in getting the word out to your fellow students is invited and welcome.  Hence, a few requests:

  1. link the site to your virtual information for Mason graduate and professional students
  2. refer current and prospective graduate students to the site in your correspondence and conversations
  3. distribute a message to your club or organization members to increase their awareness of the site
  4. take a look at the content and provide suggestions and updates to gradlife@gmu.edu or by clicking the "Comments & Suggestions" link in the footer of the site.

The content and design of the site is based on eight graduate and professional student focus groups on all three campuses held in early fall 2011 and on interviews with over 30 graduate student life stakeholders, e.g., University Life units, Academic Affairs units, Libraries, ITU, Alumni Affairs, Parking & Transportation, and Auxiliary Enterprises.

Creative Services at Mason designed and developed the site. Amy Gillies, Graduate Programs Coordinator, and Janice Sutera, Director of Special Projects for UL, served as project leads.  The site is the most recent outcome of the vibrant collaboration between Michelle Marks, Associate Provost, Graduate Education and Patricia Carretta, Assistant Vice President, University Life.

I invite and welcome your comments!
Sincerely,
Janice
