Moments of Truth Lecture

On October 4 from 3:00 - 4:30 PM, Mason will host Dr. Chris Myers Asch in the Center for the Arts Lobby as the 2011 Moments of Truth Speaker. Dr. Asch is a history professor at the University of District of Columbia and author of The Senator and the Sharecropper, a compelling book about the way the economics of the cotton industry and the politics of Senator James O. Eastland influenced the progress of the civil rights movement in Mississippi. Dr. Asch weaves the story of Senator Eastland with the life of Fannie Lou Hamer, the daughter of a sharecropper and civil rights activist.

The title for the lecture is Unfinished Work: Mississippi, D.C., and the Struggle to Live Up to American Ideals. According to the speaker, “The title comes from Lincoln’s line at the end of his second Inaugural Address, where he talks about how we must ‘strive on to finish the work we are in.’” He plans to talk about his time in Mississippi with Teach for America, as well as his experience growing up in DC public schools, his efforts to start the Public Service Academy, and his book.

There will be a book signing and reception following the free lecture. This event is sponsored by the CHSS Interdisciplinary Curriculum Collaborative. For more information about the Moments of Truth Lecture, contact the Bachelor of Individualized Study (BIS) office at bis@gmu.edu or 3-4556.

Dissertation and Thesis Workshops

Mason University Libraries, University Dissertation & Thesis Services (UDTS), and the Division of Instructional Technology (DoIT) are excited to bring back our three-part workshops, designed to help you format and submit your thesis or dissertation correctly and on time!

These workshops will take place at the following times:

Monday, October 17, from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 20, from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Both workshops will be held in 334 Innovation Hall. Both sessions are two hours long, and both consist of the following three segments:

Part 1: Sally Evans, Coordinator of University Dissertation and Thesis Services, will give an overview of UDTS and the process grad students need to go through in order to graduate--specifically, the format review, submission consultation, and final submission of your thesis or dissertation.

Part 2: Abel Roasa of DoIT will introduce you to the Interactive Template. This amazing tool will make formatting your thesis or dissertation a breeze.

Part 3: Allison Meyer O'Connor will introduce you to Zotero, a research tool that helps you gather and organize your sources and make them work for you, as citations, references, footnotes, you name it.

To sign up for either of these sessions, please email training@gmu.edu to sign up. We hope to add more sessions as soon as possible; we'll let you know when we do.

If you have any questions or need any further information, please contact Sally Evans, UDTS Coordinator, at udts@gmu.edu, or Marlys Shoup, a DoIT team member, at mshoup@gmu.edu.

We hope you can make it!

Thank you,

Sally
