Online Spring 2012 Graduation Applications are Available
If you plan to graduate from a doctoral program, you must fill out the Doctoral Graduation Form, which is online This from must be completed and submitted to the Higher Education Program by February 7th, 2012. Our fax number is (703) 993-2307.
Students are also required to file an online intent to graduate via Patriot Web before the February 7th deadline. Please note that students, regardless of their degree program, must file their intent to graduate.
University Dissertation & Thesis Workshops this November
Mason University Libraries, University Dissertation & Thesis Services (UDTS), and the Division of Instructional Technology (DoIT) are excited to offer more three-part workshops this Fall, designed to help you format and submit your thesis or dissertation correctly and on time!
These workshops will take place in 334 Innovation Hall at the following dates and times:
Monday, November 14, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 17, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Friday, November 18, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Monday, November 21, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Monday, November 28, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Thursday, December 1, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
These workshops will be held in 334 Innovation Hall. All sessions are two hours long, and all consist of the following three segments:
Part 1: Sally Evans, Coordinator of University Dissertation and Thesis Services, will give an overview of UDTS and the process grad students need to go through in order to graduate--specifically, the format review, submission consultation, and final submission of your thesis or dissertation.
Part 2: Abel Roasa of DoIT (the Division of Instructional Technology) will introduce you to the Interactive Template. This amazing tool will make formatting your thesis or dissertation a breeze.
Part 3: A member of University Libraries (either Allison Meyer O'Connor or Royce Gildersleeve) will introduce you to Zotero, a research tool that helps you gather and organize your sources and make them work for you, as citations, references, footnotes, you name it.

Research Methods/PLP Assistantship Search
The Center for International Student Access is looking for a graduate student assistant in a semester-long teaching and program support position for 20 hours per week for the Peer Learning Partnership Program between students in the Honors College and ACCESS program (international undergraduate students). This position is great for someone interested in higher education, cultural, international, or student development areas of interest. The individual must have demonstrated experience in research and scholarly inquiry.
The position’s duties include:
· Researching, preparing, and presenting training materials (PROV 206);
· Participating in the PLP interview and selection process;
· Administrative tasks to promote and support the program;
· Evaluating and reviewing student interaction and progress;
· Scheduling and attending meetings to report on program progress; and
· Attending recitations of Introduction to Research Methods (PROV 106) to aid
students in research on a one-on-one basis.
Applicants must demonstrate superior proficiency in English language and intercultural communication skills. Experience with assessment tools, such as rubrics, strongly preferred.
The position starts November 15, 2011, pays at the university standard assistantship salary based on educational background, for 20 hours weekly with 6 credit tuition waiver (at the in-state tuition rate) for the Spring 2012 term. This position is not eligible for health insurance benefits. Teaching experience strongly preferred. Doctoral students will receive primary consideration.

Spotlight on Our HEP Family

Kevin Christian co-presented at the National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) Leadership Symposium (Sept. 20-22) in San Antonio, TX..
Kevin also moderated Confronting the Challenge: A Dialogue on Inclusion and Leadership in Community Colleges at the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA) Mid-Level Institute for African American Community College Administrators at the Wayne Community College District in Detroit, MI in mid-October.
Jamie Lester received the Margaret C. Howell Award at Mason's Annual Award Ceremony held in Dewberry Hall on October 19th.
This award recognizes individuals whose efforts carry on the work and demonstrate the character of the late Margaret C. Howell, who retired from George Mason University in 2002 after 20 years of outstanding, committed service. Her work focused on the development of respect, diversity and individual dignity throughout the University and the community.
President Alan Merten, who made the presentation, noted that "Jaime embodies the spirit and passion of the work done by Margaret Howell during her career at Mason. Jaime brings a scholar's eye to issues of importance in the work lives of all people, with special emphasis on those in need. Her analytical mind and intellectual curiosity have led to important research in a range of areas including workplace bullying. Jaime's efforts in this area have stimulated an important dialogue at Mason and beyond."
